Working Toward $2.5 Billion in Malaria Grantmaking
GiveWell aims to direct at least $2.5 billion in new malaria funding from 2027 through 2032. This builds on GiveWell’s growth over the past five years as we’ve expanded the scale of our team and grantmaking. This year, we expect to direct more than $1 billion in donor funding across all areas, more than double the amount we directed last year.
Malaria control has long been a central focus of our work—in total, GiveWell has directed more than $1.3 billion to malaria prevention and treatment to date. Malaria kills around 600,000 people each year, most of whom are young children. There are known ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat the disease, but many people in countries where malaria is endemic don’t have access to these resources, and recent declines in health aid have widened existing funding gaps.
Our expanded support could go to current grantees as well as new organizations and novel funding vehicles. We’re in the process of assessing which strategies for deploying new malaria funding are likely to be highly cost-effective and scalable. One strategy we’re exploring is the Malaria Impact Accelerator—a partnership with the Global Fund to help rapidly scale our impact across many programs in many countries at once.
We’re also growing our grantmaking in other areas. We expect to direct more than $1 billion outside malaria in 2027. While the scale of our grantmaking is growing, we remain focused on researching the most cost‑effective ways to save and improve lives, sharing our work openly, and directing donations to help people in need as much as we can.
On our blog, we share more about our growing malaria grantmaking—including what and how much we might fund, how long we’ll fund programs, the components of the Malaria Impact Accelerator, and more.
Behind the Research: How Our Team Tackles Hard Questions
As GiveWell works to direct substantially more funding, our research is expanding in two directions: going broader, to cover more areas of global health and development, and going deeper, to improve the inputs that inform our decision-making.
In our recent podcast episode, GiveWell co-founder and CEO Elie Hassenfeld speaks with three researchers about
